How Many Times Have I Passed You By?

Explorations in Intuitive Art

Gliding silently

Trail unnoticed by people in high places

Only through eyes of innocence

May your wonders

Be seen

What emerges from intuitive art….is not really art at all. It is a piece of the heart. A chunk of life working its way through an inner world eager to explore new understandings.

So subtly revolutionary that I call my own practice Creative Disruption.

How Many Times Have I Passed You By began as a whisper. From the soppy forest floor of Olympic National Park. Oh, the treasures to be found among moss and mulch!

But even treasures firmly recorded in iPhone pixels have a way of drifting. Shifting from compact cloud storage to tender tiny inner spaces. In a 949 mile Delta airbus download landing on a runway near home.

And into my non-art studio. Where magic happens.

A Question Arises

Creative Disruption begins with a wild-child free-for-all of mysteriously directed energy. Unplanned, illogical, unhinged. Until one intimate query ..j..u..s..t.. out of reach, finally comes into view.

How many times have I passed you by…lost in the twisted timetables of self-enforced deadlines?

Discomfort is sure to arise. Avoiders may name the voice of blame as creative self-judgment. And quickly white-blank-gesso emerging pages. Seeking a pain free start. But I know better. It will return.

So I return to face the question squarely.

How many times have I avoided your eyes? Shrunk from your pain. Tuned my ears inward…instead of listening to your story.

I want to hide from a memory heavy with misjudged moments. But I step forward instead. With just enough intention to spark a contemplative fire, but not so much as to bully the vulnerable one…who is ready to speak.

I am here to hear.

So intuition is the very personal way we listen to the Universe in order to discover and rediscover the learnings we were born with.

I breathe. And let go of control. Because I’ve got this. And the creative one is ready to play.

Are You Curious About How Creative Disruption Unfolds? Let’s Unpack It.

There are no special skills required to be an intuitive artist. You simply can’t get it wrong…because the entire purpose of your work….is….PLAY.

In the release of expectations and outcomes, each journal spread takes on a life of its own. A unique voice that arises, unbidden. Perfectly orchestrated to act as a personal book of wisdom.

Because who knows you better than YOU?

SETTING UP

Recycling magazine and book pages is fun, saves money on materials, and is earth friendly.

Recycling magazine and book pages is fun, saves money on materials, and is earth friendly.

  1. Choose 2-3 colors of paint, plus white and a dark neutral. Here…teal, lt. ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, and payne’s gray.

  2. Tear pages from books, magazines, and catalogs, a foundation for hand painted art papers.

  3. Scrape, splash, stencil, and script in a variety of patterns. Explore lights, mid tones, and darks.

TIME TO GET MESSY. IT’S FUN!

  1. My journal of choice: a mixed media pad 11X14. Use gel medium to apply a few interesting collage shapes before you paint.

  2. Randomly spread paint over background using brushes, rollers, stencils and scraping tools.

  3. “Print” additional shapes by laying paper shapes paint side down and rolling with a brayer.

A THEME EMERGES

I soften a few chaotic sections of the background. Mushrooms, snail, and the boy’s hair are torn from hand painted collage paper. I use a paint marker to script my poem.

  1. The colors of Olympic National Park spark today’s theme, and a poem. The Unnoticed.

  2. Since I tend to lose all of my interesting marks when I paint figures directly on the page…

  3. I draw my figure on newsprint, and trace the outlines. To be filled with a combination of collage and paint.

A Little Paint…A Little Gel Medium…Voila!

I paint the figure’s pants, leaving peeps of the underlayer. Shirt: hand painted art paper. And finally, a few extra swirls of collage in circles that flow off of the edge…just because.
